Newcastle Anzac Day Dawn Service: Essential Tips for Nobbys Beach

Attending the Newcastle Anzac Day Dawn Service at Nobbys beach requires careful planning to navigate parking, arrival times, and appropriate clothing. To fully appreciate this solemn occasion, preparation before leaving home is key, ensuring a smooth and respectful experience for all attendees.

Transport and Arrival Recommendations

The most efficient way to reach the service is by using public transport. It is advised to park in the west end of Newcastle near the interchange and then board the light rail, which operates from 3:30 am. From the Pacific Park light rail stop, it is a 10-minute walk to the site at Nobbys. Additionally, Stockton ferries will start running from 3:30 am, with parking available close to the ferry wharf.

Arriving early is crucial to avoid missing the 5 am start. By timing your travel to reach Nobbys well before the service begins, you can secure a good viewing spot, enjoy a coffee, and fully engage with the ceremony rather than standing at the back of the crowd.

Attire and Comfort Considerations

Dressing in warm clothing is essential, as even in fine weather, the wind at daybreak can be bitterly cold. Ensure children are well protected with layers that can be removed as the day warms up. Carrying a bottle of water in your bag is also recommended for hydration during the event.

Post-Service Activities and Events

After the service, take a moment to watch the sunrise over Nobbys beach and then walk down to one of the many cafes that will be open for breakfast. The Anzac Day march forms up in Perkins Street, Hunter Street Mall, and steps off at 9:10 am. If you wish to march, see a marshal for directions on where to form up.

The march proceeds along King Street to Civic Park, with the best viewing spots on either side of King Street. Following the march, the United Service of Commemoration is held in Civic Park, starting with a flyover from RAAF Williamtown at 10 am. All are welcome to attend this service at the Cenotaph, the main memorial to the fallen in Newcastle.

Ken Fayle, past president and spokesperson for Newcastle RSL Sub-Branch, which coordinates Anzac Day commemorations each year, emphasizes the importance of these preparations to honor the day meaningfully.
