The city of Perth is preparing to transform into a sea of green this weekend as the annual St Patrick's Day Festival returns to Birdwood Square, celebrating Irish culture, music, and community connections. Scheduled for Saturday, March 14, from 10am to 6pm, this free event promises a day filled with lively entertainment, traditional food, and family-friendly activities.
Festival Highlights and Historical Significance
George Harrington, chairman of the St Patrick's Day Parade WA, announced that this year's festival theme is "Freedom, Courage & Irish Spirit", a concept that deeply resonates with Perth's Irish community. "No doubt it is something we can all relate to after travelling so far to live in beautiful Perth," he remarked, emphasizing the shared experiences of migration and cultural pride.
The main festivities at Birdwood Square will feature:
- Live music performances by bands such as Foreign Sons and Black Rose
- Irish dancers showcasing traditional steps
- Food stalls offering hearty Irish feeds
- Reasonably priced Irish beverages for adults
- Family-friendly entertainment throughout the day
A highlight of the celebrations is the grand Irish parade, which will commence at 10am from the corner of Beaufort and Brisbane streets, winding through the city to add a colorful spectacle to the day.
This year's St Patrick's Day holds extra significance as it coincides with the 150th anniversary of the Catalpa escape, a daring 1876 event where six Irish political prisoners fled Fremantle Prison and escaped Western Australia aboard the American whaling ship Catalpa. Harrington noted that this anniversary underscores the historical ties between Ireland and WA, serving as a reminder of Ireland's prominent role in Western Australian and global history.
Community Support and Venue Preparations
Alison Xamon, mayor of the City of Vincent, expressed pride in supporting the community event. "We love to support events that strengthen community connection, which is why we continue to be a proud sponsor of the St Patrick's Day Festival," she said. "The festival brings together people of all ages and backgrounds to enjoy Irish culture and traditions and is one of Vincent's most popular free events."
Beyond the official festival, Irish pubs across Perth are gearing up for a week of jam-packed celebrations. Molly's Irish Pub, with locations in Highgate and Victoria Park, is hosting week-long events featuring live music, proper Irish feeds, and a vibrant pub atmosphere. Co-owner Lee Behan shared that St Patrick's Day is about celebrating Irish identity and gathering with friends. "It's a celebration of Irish culture and identity; it's a day in the calendar where we meet our friends over a few pints, listen to some traditional music and have the craic," he explained.
Behan highlighted the full Irish breakfast buffet available on Saturday and Tuesday, complete with classics like sausages and bacon from McLoughlin Butchers, black and white pudding, tomato, beans, and toast, ideally paired with an Irish coffee or Barry's Tea. The new Victoria Park beer garden will also offer Guinness, Irish dancers, and music, adding to the festive spirit.
Adding to the weekend's significance, Irish Mother's Day falls on Sunday, March 15. Behan noted that this is a day to honor Irish mammies by taking them out for a proper pub lunch, rather than letting them cook.
Other venues across the city, including Durty Nelly's Irish Pub and Johnny Fox's Bar, will host live music, Irish dancers, and traditional food throughout the weekend, ensuring that Perth's St Patrick's Day celebrations are widespread and inclusive.
