Mayor Confirms Harbour Remains Premier Viewing Location
Wollongong City Mayor Tania Brown addressed the adjustments made due to weather concerns, assuring attendees that the harbour would still offer the best vantage point for the fireworks. "Even with the different launch point, the fireworks will still break over the Harbour and, weather permitting, there'll be no better place to be come 9 pm Monday," she stated. Mayor Brown explained that a backup plan had been implemented to ensure flexibility, noting, "We put a backup option in place that lets us be as nimble as possible. The weather gods will always have their own ideas, but based on all the information available, Plan B gives us the best chance of the fireworks going ahead."
Community Spirit and Multicultural Flavours on Display
Attendee Marisol Watt reflected the general sentiment, saying, "It's lovely, and it's wonderful to see everyone enjoying themselves." Further along the Blue Mile at North Beach, hundreds of families had set up for the day, creating a lively atmosphere with barbecues filled with meats from various cultures, which brought a unique aroma to the air. Informal cricket matches added to the festive spirit, with trees and bins serving as makeshift stumps.

The festivities received significant backing through a $15,000 grant from the Federal Government, allocated via the National Australia Day grant program. Member for Cunningham Alison Bynes highlighted the day's significance, remarking, "I'm glad events like this give our community the opportunity to reflect, respect and celebrate our proud, ancient, and multicultural nation." She emphasised that Australia Day holds diverse meanings for different people, underscoring the event's role in fostering community cohesion and national pride.
