A host of renowned and international actors have descended upon Western Australia's South West region as production intensifies for the upcoming Netflix series Breakers. This high-profile project is set to become the largest screen production ever undertaken in the state, promising significant economic benefits and showcasing local talent on a global platform.
Star-Studded Cast Headlines the Surfing Drama
Leading the cast is Antony Starr, the New Zealand actor acclaimed for his portrayal of Homelander in the hit Amazon Prime Video series The Boys. He is joined by a diverse ensemble of rising stars, including Canadian actor D'Pharaoh Woon-A-Tai, who made history in 2024 as the first Indigenous actor nominated for a Primetime Emmy Award for Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series for his role in Reservation Dogs.
Emerging Australian talent Oliver Edis, a disability advocate known for his appearance in the series Gnomes, has also secured a pivotal role in Breakers, marking a major career breakthrough. Additionally, Annabel Wolfe, recognized for her part in the Netflix teen drama Surviving Summer and set to star in the upcoming Australian film Seven Snipers, rounds out the key cast members.
Economic Impact and Production Details
The eight-part series is projected to employ more than 100 local residents and inject over $19 million into the Western Australian economy. Executive producer Wim De Greef, who produced the multi-Emmy award-winning series Baby Reindeer, highlighted the crucial support from government initiatives in making this large-scale production feasible.
"The Australian Government's Location Offset, together with the support of the WA Government through Screenwest, has played a key role in making this production possible at the scale we hoped for, and we are thankful for that support," De Greef stated. The series benefits from the WA Production Attraction Incentive, managed by Screenwest, which aims to attract high-profile, market-driven screen productions to the region.
Supporting Cast and Filming Location
Other actors contributing to the series in supporting roles include Asher Yasbincek, David Howell, Tyroe Muhafidin, Tom Dawson, Sherry-Lee Watson, Lu Miller, Eliza Learmonth, and Brodie Townsend, many of whom have notable credits in Australian television and film. Filming is taking place in picturesque locations across the South West, including Busselton, with Western Australian production designer Emma Fletcher and costume designer Lien See Leong lending their expertise to the project.
This initiative not only boosts the local film industry but also positions Western Australia as a premier destination for international productions, leveraging its natural landscapes and skilled workforce to create compelling content for global audiences.
