Veteran Australian actor Ray Meagher, famous for playing Alf Stewart on Home and Away, left everyone in hysterics during a recent radio interview. The television icon delivered a perfectly-timed, in-character warning that has since gone viral.
A Flamin' Funny Radio Stitch-Up
The hilarious moment unfolded when Meagher was a guest on the Kate, Ritchie & Wippa show. The hosts asked the 79-year-old actor to perform a version of UK singer Raye's song, Where The Hell Is My Husband? Meagher was having absolutely none of it.
Channeling his famously cranky Home and Away character, Meagher hilariously refused the request. "These people asked me if I'd sing a song by somebody who I'd never heard of," he declared. He went on to describe the song as "the rattiest lot of dialogue, tripe I've ever heard" before concluding, "Nah, you've stitched me up."
His former co-star, Kate Ritchie, who played Sally Fletcher for two decades, was quick to distance herself from the prank. "I didn't know about this, by the way," Ritchie clarified as her co-hosts Ryan 'Fitzy' Fitzgerald and Michael 'Wippa' Wipfli dissolved into laughter.
The Alf Stewart Remix and a Potential Return to the Bay
The radio hosts then played a specially edited version of Raye's song, which was peppered with Alf Stewart's most iconic phrases. The mash-up included classic lines like "flamin' mongrels", "what's all that racket about?" and "long-haired yahoos".
Meagher appeared genuinely amused by the creative edit. At the end of the segment, he delivered the punchline that had listeners howling, joking, "You'll be hearing from my lawyers."
The conversation then turned to the possibility of Kate Ritchie making a permanent return to Summer Bay. Wipfli suggested that a "small dream on behalf of Australia" would be to see her character back in 2026. When Ritchie seemed embarrassed by the topic, Wipfli pointed out she had never clearly refused the idea.
In a touching show of support, Meagher, who has been on the Channel 7 show for nearly 40 years, said he would make an exception to his own rule. "I've never been to the producers about a storyline for me, but I'd make an exception in Kate's case and go and have a yarn to them," the veteran actor promised.
Home and Away's 'Scary' Season Finale
The interview also covered the upcoming Home and Away 2025 season finale, which Meagher described as "scary". The finale, airing on Wednesday at 7pm, will feature a catastrophic train crash where one character will die.
"I've heard a lot of people describe Home and Away as a train crash," Meagher said, "but I can honestly say for a two-and-a-half-hour-a-week production, this is absolutely amazing, it's so well done."
He confirmed that many key characters are involved in the crash, leaving viewers to wonder who will survive. Fortunately for Alf Stewart fans, Meagher confirmed his character is not on the doomed train, stating simply, "He couldn't make that trip."
The Home and Away season finale airs on Wednesday, December 3, 2025, at 7pm on Seven and 7plus.
