Casuarina Prison Under Threat as Perth Bushfire Rages Out of Control
Casuarina Prison threatened by out of control bushfire

A major bushfire emergency is unfolding in Perth's southern suburbs, with Casuarina Prison directly in the path of an unpredictable and fast-moving blaze that has already consumed three hectares of land.

Emergency Warning Issued for Casuarina Area

The Department of Fire and Emergency Services escalated the situation to a Watch and Act level at approximately 12.20pm on Wednesday, November 12, 2025. The warning covers residents within boundaries formed by Orton Road to the north, Casuarina Road to the east, Mortimer Road to the south, and Nicholas Drive across to Orton Road to the west.

Fire authorities have confirmed the blaze began around 11.30am on Wednesday and has since grown into an out-of-control incident moving in a north-easterly direction toward the correctional facility.

Firefighting Efforts Intensify

Emergency services have deployed significant resources to combat the threatening flames. Volunteer firefighters, career firefighters, and at least two waterbombers are actively working to contain the blaze and protect properties in its path.

A DFES spokesperson issued a stark warning to residents: "There is a possible threat to lives and homes as a fire is burning in the area and conditions are changing."

The department urged people in affected areas to:

  • Stay alert and continuously monitor their surroundings
  • Be prepared to act quickly if conditions deteriorate
  • Leave immediately if not properly prepared or if they have difficulty moving quickly

Prison Evacuation Considerations

The proximity of the fire to Casuarina Prison has raised serious concerns about the safety of inmates and staff. While evacuation plans for the facility remain unconfirmed, the Department of Justice has been formally contacted regarding contingency measures.

The correctional facility, which houses a significant number of prisoners, faces complex logistical challenges should an evacuation become necessary. Emergency services and prison authorities are likely coordinating behind the scenes to prepare for any scenario.

As the fire continues to burn unpredictably, residents throughout the Casuarina area remain on high alert, with the situation developing rapidly throughout the afternoon.
