Police Launch Weekend E-Bike Safety Operation on Fernleigh Track

Lake Macquarie police conducted a targeted safety operation over the weekend, patrolling the Fernleigh Track and shared pathways between Belmont and Speers Point. The initiative, which took place on Saturday, March 14, from 10am to 8pm, involved officers on foot and using e-bikes to engage with the community.

Engagement and Education for Young Riders

During the operation, police spoke with more than 80 children and teenagers, providing crucial education on e-bike safety and the legal requirements for using these devices. A spokesperson for Lake Macquarie police noted that the majority of pathway users were considerate, but enforcement actions were still necessary.

One infringement notice was issued, and twelve other riders were dealt with under the Young Offenders Act for offences related to helmet use and mobile phone distractions while riding.

Ongoing Efforts to Enhance Pathway Safety

The weekend patrol is part of a broader strategy by police to address the rise in e-micromobility activity across the Hunter and Central Coast regions. This follows previous initiatives, such as Operation Shore Safe, which ran throughout the summer to educate communities on the safe and legal use of e-bikes and e-scooters.

Additionally, police increased patrols on the Fernleigh Track approximately a year ago in response to reports of attacks and anti-social behaviour, highlighting a continued commitment to public safety.

Future Patrols and Community Impact

The Lake Macquarie police spokesperson confirmed that similar operations will continue in the future to support education and improve safety for all users of shared pathways. This proactive approach aims to foster a safer environment for pedestrians, cyclists, and e-bike riders alike, ensuring that public spaces remain accessible and secure for everyone.
