The City of Canning has proudly honoured its most dedicated community members through the annual Community Citizen of the Year Awards, presented during the vibrant Australia Day Family Fun Day celebrations. These prestigious awards shine a spotlight on individuals and groups whose selfless contributions have significantly enriched the local area, fostering a stronger and more connected community.
Celebrating Excellence at Shelley Beach Foreshore
The awards ceremony took place on Monday, January 26, at the picturesque Shelley Beach Foreshore, as part of a free, family-friendly, and dog-friendly community event by the river. This joyful gathering provided the perfect backdrop to acknowledge those who work tirelessly behind the scenes to make Canning a better place for all residents.
Meet the 2026 Award Recipients
The City of Canning recognised four distinct categories of community service, each highlighting different aspects of civic dedication and leadership.
Active Community Citizen of the Year: This award was presented to the Friends of Shelley Rossmoyne Foreshore group. The organisation was honoured for its long-standing commitment to environmental conservation along the Canning River. Their work combines hands-on restoration efforts with strategic advocacy, which has played a crucial role in shaping local environmental policy. Notably, their initiatives have helped protect local biodiversity by establishing a vital wildlife corridor, demonstrating how community action can lead to tangible environmental benefits.
Community Citizen of the Year: Darren Hamley received this accolade in recognition of his extensive and ongoing volunteer contributions across the city. His efforts include dedicated support for the Rossmoyne Community Kindergarten, active involvement in rescuing and rehabilitating local wildlife, and maintaining strong engagement with students through environmental education and mentorship programs. Mr Hamley's multifaceted volunteerism exemplifies a deep-rooted commitment to nurturing both people and nature within the community.
Young Community Citizen of the Year: Sheandra Perera was named the young community citizen of the year, celebrated for her remarkable compassion and dedication to service. She has generously volunteered her time to support individuals experiencing homelessness and has participated in impactful initiatives such as the World's Greatest Shave, showcasing how youthful energy can drive meaningful social change.
Senior Community Citizen of the Year: Stephen Johnston was honoured with this award for his sustained leadership in environmental conservation and education. Through his role as chair of SERCUL (South East Regional Centre for Urban Landcare), Mr Johnston has achieved region-wide impact. His work encompasses large-scale restoration projects, fostering collaboration among various stakeholders, and advancing community education on environmental stewardship, making him a pivotal figure in the region's conservation efforts.

Mayor Patrick Hall expressed profound gratitude on behalf of the City of Canning, emphasising the significance of these awards in acknowledging the often-unseen work that strengthens the community.

Their generosity, leadership and willingness to give back create a stronger, more connected City of Canning, and we are grateful for the difference they make."

This collaboration underscores the program's alignment with statewide efforts to celebrate civic contribution and foster a culture of volunteerism and community engagement on Australia Day and throughout the year.
