Sydney's Southern Suburbs Mourn Tragic Loss
The Sydney community is in mourning after an elderly pedestrian was fatally struck by a school bus in the city's south this week. The victim has been identified as Tony Pesce, 87, father of former Sutherland Shire mayor Carmelo Pesce.
Details of the Tragic Incident
The fatal collision occurred at approximately 2.45pm on Monday at the intersection of The Kingsway and Miranda Road in Miranda. Mr Pesce sustained severe head and upper body injuries and was rushed to hospital, where he tragically passed away on Wednesday morning.
According to his son Carmelo, Mr Pesce was walking home from a doctor's appointment when the accident occurred. Despite medical efforts, he was unable to recover from his injuries.
Family's Heartbreaking Tribute
Carmelo Pesce, a current Sutherland Shire councillor who served as mayor from 2015 to 2020, announced his father's death in an emotional social media post that touched the local community.
"This post is one I thought I wouldn't have to make for some time yet and it's with great sadness that I write this," the grieving son expressed.
He remembered his father as a dedicated barber who began his profession as a 14-year-old in Italy and maintained his strong work ethic throughout his life.
"I always remember him working six days a week almost to the day he died, cutting some customers' hair for well over 20 years or 30 years," Carmelo wrote in his touching tribute.
He credited his father for instilling his own values, stating: "It's from him I have the work ethic that I have. I am the man I am because of my father. He will be dearly missed. I love you Dad, see you on the other side."
Investigation and Community Impact
NSW Police have launched a full investigation into the incident and are appealing for any witnesses or individuals with information to come forward. The investigation will examine the circumstances surrounding the tragic collision at the busy Miranda intersection.
The 63-year-old bus driver was taken to Sutherland Hospital for mandatory testing following the incident, as is standard procedure in such accidents.
Tony Pesce is survived by his wife Rosa, his three children Roy, Carmelo and Mario, seven grandchildren and a great-grandson. The family has requested privacy as they mourn their devastating loss.
