Gosnells Council Incentivises Community Bonding with $200 Rebate for Neighbour Day

The City of Gosnells has launched an innovative initiative to bolster neighbourhood ties by offering residents a $200 rebate for organising community events such as barbecues, picnics, street parties, sporting games, or other meet-and-greet activities. This program is specifically timed to coincide with Neighbour Day, an annual Australian celebration dedicated to breaking down social barriers and enhancing local connections to improve overall well-being.

Encouraging Events for Neighbour Day on March 29

While residents can host events at any time, the council is strongly encouraging them to plan gatherings for Neighbour Day, which falls on Sunday, March 29. This year's theme, belonging every day, underscores the council's commitment to fostering a sense of community and reducing isolation among locals. Mayor Terresa Lynes emphasised that the initiative aims to create resilient communities by promoting stronger interpersonal relationships.

"When we know our neighbours and build strong community connections, we are more likely to feel a sense of belonging and improved well-being," Mayor Lynes stated. "Connected communities are resilient communities." She highlighted that the $200 reimbursement is intended to cover expenses associated with hosting these events and urged residents to submit their applications promptly to ensure participation.

Flexible Event Options and Additional Support

Mayor Lynes outlined that eligible events can range from barbecues and picnics to morning teas or games afternoons, as long as they bring neighbours together to connect and socialise. In addition to the financial rebate, the Gosnells District Neighbourhood Watch is supporting the program by offering hosts sports equipment for hire and safety information kits, further facilitating successful and secure gatherings.

This initiative reflects a broader effort by the City of Gosnells to invest in community well-being through practical measures. By providing financial assistance and resources, the council hopes to inspire widespread participation and strengthen the social fabric of the area, making it a model for other councils aiming to enhance local engagement and combat isolation.
