Sri Lankan Resort Launches Bee Conservation Initiative for International Bee Day
Sri Lankan Resort Bee Conservation for Bee Day

With International Bee Day approaching on May 20, a new bee conservation initiative has been launched in Sri Lanka, highlighting the critical role of pollinators in ecosystems and food security. Resplendent Ceylon, a local accommodation and experience group, is championing the effort at its Cape Weligama resort on the southern coastline, in partnership with Dilmah Conservation.

Bee Boxes for Habitat

The Relais & Chateaux property is introducing on-site “bee boxes” designed to create habitat for local pollinators. The initiative aims to address the global decline in bee populations by providing safe nesting sites. Two hives have been installed, with hopes that they will give guests a unique connection to the environment.

A spokesperson for Resplendent Ceylon stated: “Developed with expert guidance, the initiative reflects a considered approach to conservation, responding to the global decline in bee populations and their essential role in pollination and food security. It’s a considered addition to the resort’s offering, with small-scale honey production reflecting the surrounding landscape and giving guests a more tangible connection to the environment.”

Expert Guidance and Training

The bee boxes were developed with the expert guidance of Dr. Anura Sirisena, senior lecturer at the Faculty of Agriculture at Rajarata University. He provided specialist training for the Cape Weligama team. Technical consultant Malinga Aththanyake oversaw the installation of the boxes, ensuring they are properly positioned for optimal bee activity.

Sustainable Honey Production

The honey sustainably harvested from the hives will offer guests a direct connection to place, allowing them to taste the landscape. This small-scale production is part of Resplendent Ceylon’s broader philosophy of “luxury with purpose,” which integrates conservation into the guest experience.

Malik J. Fernando, managing director of Cape Weligama, commented: “Our connection to the natural environment has always been central to the experience we offer our guests at Cape Weligama. This initiative is a small but meaningful step in supporting biodiversity, while creating a deeper awareness of the role we can all play in protecting fragile ecosystems. It reflects our belief that true luxury today lies not only in beautiful settings, but in preserving them for generations to come.”
