Residents of Kalgoorlie were jolted awake early Friday morning when a 3.4 magnitude earthquake struck near the gold mining town, causing houses to shake and items to fall from walls.
Earthquake Details
According to Geoscience Australia's earthquakes website, the quake occurred at 5:34 am local time at a depth of five kilometres. The epicentre was located slightly north-west of the town centre, but the tremors were felt across the entire town.
Residents React
Local residents took to social media to describe the frightening experience. One person reported, 'Shook my whole house and woke me up.' Another said the quake 'shook absolutely everything' and caused paintings to fall off the walls.
'Holy sh** the whole house just shook sideways,' wrote another resident.
In the suburb of Lamington, one resident claimed it 'felt like it was right under our house.' Another person reported that the shaking caused their television to turn on by itself.
One resident described a more dramatic shift: 'It moved our house about a metre, that was the strongest one I've felt yet in the past few years.' Another added, 'I thought the whole roof was going to fall.'
