A major weather system is continuing its path of disruption across Australia's north, with residents in Western Australia now being told to brace for impact.
Cyclone's Path of Destruction
Tropical Cyclone Fina made a forceful landfall in Darwin on Saturday night, following days of anticipation as it developed off the Northern Territory coast. The powerful system brought intense winds reaching up to 110km/h, which were strong enough to uproot trees and cause damage across the capital city.
The cyclone has since changed direction, moving west over the Joseph Bonaparte Gulf. Despite its movement, the Bureau of Meteorology has confirmed that Fina has held its strength as a category four system. However, forecasters predict it will weaken rapidly before it reaches the northeast Kimberley coast on Monday.
Imminent Threat to Kimberley Coast
The Bureau has issued a specific warning for communities along the coastline. "Destructive wind gusts to 155 km/h may develop over exposed coastal areas of the northeast Kimberley coast including King George River Mouth and Berkeley River Mouth during Monday," the warning stated.
This poses a significant risk to property and safety in the region. Authorities are urging immediate action from those in vulnerable areas.
Residents Urged to Take Action
For communities near the Daly River Mouth and Wadeye, the message is clear: preparations must begin immediately. The Bureau specifically advised residents to use available daylight hours to secure boats and property.
This proactive approach is crucial for minimising potential damage as the wild weather approaches. The situation continues to be monitored closely, and further updates are expected from emergency services.
