Perth Wakes to Thunderstorms, Rain and Smoke Haze as Weather System Intensifies

Perth residents have experienced a dramatic start to Wednesday morning, waking to a combination of lightning, thunder, rain and a noticeable smoke haze across the metropolitan area. The Bureau of Meteorology has indicated that these conditions are expected to continue and potentially intensify as the morning progresses, creating a unique and challenging weather scenario for the city.

Storm Activity and Rainfall Patterns

The rumbling of thunder could be heard from early on Wednesday morning as storms rolled in off the coast, bringing with them periods of rain, some of which has been reported as heavy. Rainfall has been observed from Gingin in the north to Mandurah in the south, covering a significant portion of the Perth region. Early risers have been capturing photographs of the storms as they move across the metropolitan area, documenting the unusual weather event.

Despite the active storm system, Perth is not forecast to receive more than 1mm of rain throughout the day, with temperatures expected to reach a maximum of 26 degrees Celsius. The Bureau of Meteorology has stated that storms will likely remain across the area throughout the morning and into the early afternoon, prompting warnings for motorists to take extra care on the roads due to potentially slippery conditions.

Smoke Haze from Prescribed Burns

Adding to the atmospheric conditions, the Department of Biodiversity, Conservation and Attractions has issued a smoke warning for Perth for Wednesday morning. This smoke haze is the result of prescribed burns conducted by Parks and Wildlife Service firefighters approximately 40km away from Perth on Tuesday. These controlled burns are part of a carefully planned risk reduction program aimed at managing fire hazards in the region.

Brodie Selby, DBCA Swan Region Regional Leader Fire Management, explained the significance of these burns. "The smoke is the result of a couple of large landscape burns which is happening at the back of Perth Hills Forest, which is really important part of our risk reduction prescribed burning program," he said. "This activity follows careful planning and preparation to ensure community safety and environmental protection."

Broader Weather System Impact

The weather system affecting Perth is part of a larger trough impacting a substantial portion of Western Australia, stretching from the Pilbara region all the way to the Great Southern area. This widespread weather pattern contributes to the unstable conditions experienced in Perth and surrounding regions.
