From Foster to Forever: A Greyhound Adoption Success Story in NSW
Sometimes, life presents moments that feel perfectly timed, and for Renee and Paul Buttigieg, that moment arrived when they decided to make Skye an official part of their family. The Buttigiegs have served as a foster family for Greyhounds As Pets NSW (GAP), a program dedicated to helping retired racing dogs transition from the track to becoming cherished household pets.
The Journey to a Foster Fail
Renee and Paul had previously fostered approximately eight greyhounds, providing them with a temporary home and essential training. However, their path took a heartfelt turn when Mel Hawkett, the site manager at GAP's Western Sydney facility, introduced them to Skye. Renee explained, "We lost our previous greyhound, Johnny, and were navigating the grieving process, especially my son Jake. Skye entered our lives and seamlessly integrated into our family."
After fostering Skye, Jake expressed his readiness to welcome another greyhound into their home, leading to what is affectionately known as a "foster fail"—when foster parents decide to adopt the dog permanently. Renee recounted, "I called Mel and said, 'Take her off the list; she's ours.' Mel admitted she had sent us Skye intentionally, anticipating this outcome."
The Role of GAP in Greyhound Rehabilitation
Greyhounds As Pets NSW plays a crucial role in preparing these dogs for domestic life. Renee emphasized, "For us, fostering has always been about assisting the dogs, offering them a chance to leave kennels and learn what it means to be a pet. We help them adjust to everyday elements like floorboards, tiles, vacuums, TVs, and stairs." She praised the GAP team for their dedication, stating, "They invest significant time teaching the dogs essential skills, and I've witnessed their commitment over the years."
National Adoption Day Events Across NSW
To celebrate National Adoption Day, GAP will host multiple events throughout New South Wales this weekend. On Sunday, April 19, gatherings will occur at the Entertainment Quarter in Sydney's Moore Park, Petstock in Dubbo, and Anzac Park in Tamworth. Additionally, events are scheduled for Saturday, April 18, at Petbarn in Coffs Harbour and Petstock in Wagga Wagga.
Renee encourages the public to attend, noting, "It's a fantastic opportunity to meet these wonderful dogs, but beware—you might fall in love. The team provides ongoing support, ensuring a smooth transition for both the dog and the adopter."

Mark Slater, GAP's chief welfare officer, also urged people to visit the events without any pressure. He said, "Each year, we witness families, couples, and singles finding their perfect pet, and we showcase how gentle and amazing greyhounds are as companions. Many attendees come with no adoption plans but leave smitten with these beautiful animals."
