In a remarkable display of canine prowess, a Queensland police dog named Duke has become the hero of the hour after tracking down an alleged car thief overnight in Cairns.
The dramatic events unfolded after police received multiple reports of fuel and liquor thefts across several northern suburbs. According to authorities, the crime spree culminated in the alleged theft of a vehicle from the Redlynch area.
The Chase Is On
Queensland Police Service officers quickly located the stolen vehicle travelling through Redlynch Valley shortly before midnight. What followed was a tense pursuit through the suburban streets.
"Police attempted to intercept the vehicle; however, it failed to stop," a police spokesperson confirmed. The driver allegedly continued into Brinsmead, where the situation took a dramatic turn.
Duke Takes the Lead
After the vehicle was finally stopped, the alleged driver made a desperate attempt to escape on foot into nearby bushland. This is where Police Dog Duke entered the scene.
The highly trained German Shepherd was deployed and immediately picked up the scent. Following a swift tracking operation through the challenging terrain, Duke successfully located a 38-year-old Manoora man hiding in the bush.
Charges Laid After Dramatic Capture
The suspect now faces serious charges including unlawful use of a motor vehicle, driving without a license, and two counts of stealing. He is scheduled to appear in Cairns Magistrates Court later today.
This incident highlights the invaluable role police dogs play in frontline operations across Queensland. Duke's tracking abilities proved crucial in bringing this alleged crime spree to a swift conclusion and ensuring the suspect was apprehended safely.
Police investigations into the series of fuel and liquor thefts are continuing as authorities work to determine the full extent of the alleged offences.
