A Geelong man has been slapped with serious charges after an alarming incident that saw him caught driving at double the speed limit while under the influence of alcohol.
The 34-year-old Norlane resident was detected travelling at a staggering 120km/h in a signed 60km/h zone on Hendy Main Road near Winchelsea, in what police are describing as a dangerous display of recklessness.
Shocking Speed and Alcohol Reading
According to police reports, the driver returned a blood alcohol reading of 0.073 - significantly over the legal limit of 0.05 for fully licensed drivers in Victoria.
"This is exactly the type of behaviour that puts every road user at risk," said a police spokesperson. "Driving at twice the posted speed limit while impaired by alcohol shows a complete disregard for community safety."
Court Appearance and Consequences
The man faced Geelong Magistrates' Court on Tuesday, where he was convicted and fined $1,200 for his dangerous actions. His driver's licence was also suspended for 12 months, meaning he'll be off Victorian roads for a full year.
Police have emphasised that this case serves as a stark reminder of the serious consequences facing those who choose to drink and drive, particularly when combined with excessive speeding.
Community Safety Warning
Local residents have expressed concern about the incident, given the area's 60km/h limit is designed to protect both motorists and pedestrians in the Winchelsea region.
Victoria Police continue to run regular operations targeting speeding and drink-driving offenders across the Geelong and Surf Coast regions, with a particular focus on country roads where such behaviour can have catastrophic consequences.
