Man charged over fatal Melbourne comic convention crash that killed pedestrian
A 33-year-old learner driver has fronted court accused of driving into two pedestrians outside a Melbourne comic book convention, resulting in one death and serious injuries. Awer Dau, from Yarraville, appeared before Melbourne Magistrate’s Court on Sunday night, charged with dangerous driving causing death and culpable driving.
Details of the tragic incident
Police allege that Dau was driving a Toyota Echo when it crossed several lanes of traffic, mounted the curb outside the Flemington Showgrounds on Langs Rd in Ascot Vale, and struck two 20-year-old men who were leaving Supanova Comic-Con at 5pm on Saturday. One of the men was killed instantly, while his friend was rushed to hospital with serious injuries to his lower body. A third man avoided being hit but was taken to hospital for observation as a precaution.
The car continued down the footpath for more than 100 metres before coming to a stop, where the driver was detained by an off-duty police officer and a bystander. Witness Rory Rouillon described the scene, saying, “We were all taken by surprise, it screeched, bang, within two, three seconds, it just all happened instantly.” He added, “And then hearing screaming saying, ‘stay right there, get back’.”
Police investigation and court proceedings
Detective Inspector Craig McEvoy stated that “nothing suggests” the crash was due to a medical episode, and police are investigating all possibilities. He noted, “Obviously speed, alcohol, drugs and driver distraction will all form part of the investigation.” McEvoy emphasized the rarity of the incident, explaining, “To get across the lane, up onto the footpath and then travel 120 metres along the footpath in between a two-metre-high fence, trees and power poles is extremely rare.” He also expressed sadness, saying, “I assume people were leaving at that time ... It’s so sad that one person has lost their life, but it could have been a lot worse.”
Dau did not apply for bail on Sunday and will be remanded in custody until his next court appearance on September 15. The extended time between appearances was granted to the police prosecutor, who informed the court that multiple investigations are necessary to build a case against Dau. According to reports, these investigations include:
- A toxicological report
- Forensic examinations of the Toyota vehicle
- Reviewing CCTV footage
- Gathering witness statements
- Reconstructing the crash scene
The court also heard that Dau was allegedly on bail at the time of the crash, adding another layer to the legal proceedings.
Community response and tributes
Thousands of people attended the second day of the Supanova convention on Sunday, where a minute’s silence was observed in honor of the man killed the day before. Floral tributes were left at the crash site, reflecting the community’s grief and solidarity. The incident has shocked attendees and locals, highlighting the tragic consequences of the alleged dangerous driving.
As the investigation continues, authorities are working to determine the exact causes of the crash, with a focus on ensuring justice for the victims and their families. The case underscores the importance of road safety, particularly in crowded event areas.
