Two young provisional drivers in Canberra are facing severe financial and driving penalties after being caught committing extreme speeding offences over the weekend.
Dangerous driving incidents uncovered
ACT Policing reported that officers first detected a 19-year-old man from Macgregor driving a Hyundai Tiburon on William Hovell Drive in Hawker at approximately 11:45 pm on Saturday, November 8. The driver was recorded travelling at 145 km/h in a 90 km/h zone, exceeding the speed limit by 55 kilometres per hour.
In a separate incident occurring just one hour later, police caught an 18-year-old man from Page behind the wheel of an Audi S3 on Coulter Drive in Cook. This driver was recorded at an alarming 167 km/h in an 80 km/h zone, representing a speed excess of 87 kilometres per hour.
Substantial penalties imposed
Both provisional licence holders received immediate 180-day licence suspensions and were each issued with traffic infringement notices totalling $1,841 along with six demerit points.
The consequences were even more severe for the 19-year-old driver, who received additional fines for failing to display his P-plates and not complying with vehicle standards. These extra violations brought his total infringement amount to $2,289.
Police reinforce road safety message
ACT Policing emphasised their continued commitment to an 'anywhere, anytime' approach to road safety enforcement. Authorities reminded Canberra drivers that speeding remains one of the five main contributors to fatal collisions on ACT roads.
These incidents serve as a stark warning to all drivers, particularly young motorists, about the serious consequences of excessive speeding and the zero-tolerance approach being taken by police to protect road users.
