Driver Trapped After Truck Rollover on Dangerous Perth Road
A rubbish truck driver has suffered serious injuries after his vehicle rolled over on Weir Road in Baskerville, a steep and winding route in Perth's outer northeastern suburbs that has become notorious for similar incidents.
The 57-year-old City of Swan contractor required emergency rescue crews to free him from the wreckage following the crash that occurred on Monday morning. The driver was transported to Royal Perth Hospital where he remained under care on Monday evening.
Resident Witnesses Third Major Incident in Decade
Local resident Stephanie Gate reported the driver sustained serious leg injuries and a significant head gash during the accident. She expressed frustration that this marks the third time in ten years that a truck has crashed through her property.
"This is the third time in 10 years we have had a truck go through our property," Gate told reporters. "The council refuses to do anything about it."
According to residents, the problem stems from trucks roaring downhill on the steep gradient and experiencing brake failure, leading to loss of control.
Calls for Urgent Safety Upgrades
The community is demanding immediate safety improvements to Weir Road, specifically calling for the installation of metal safety barriers to prevent similar incidents in the future.
The City of Swan has confirmed it is investigating the latest crash. Mayor Tanya Richardson addressed the situation, stating: "The safety of our staff and contractors is our priority, and our thoughts are with the driver and their family."
This incident follows two other major truck accidents on Weir Road in 2022 and 2023, highlighting what locals describe as an ongoing safety crisis that requires immediate council action.
