Tigerfish Review: Perth's Summer Sensation Lives Up to the Hype
If you attempted to secure a reservation at Tigerfish during the summer months, you likely encountered a fully booked schedule. This new Cottesloe establishment rapidly transformed into the unofficial setting for Instagram-worthy long lunches and year-end celebrations, all before many Perth diners could even step through its doors.
The Hype and the Reality
Despite initially failing to obtain a weekend booking when Tigerfish first opened, with the next available slot nearly a month away, the restaurant felt familiar due to its frequent appearance on social media feeds. Whispers circulated about minor teething problems but consistently praised the exceptional food quality. Now that the initial frenzy has slightly subsided, securing a weekday reservation just one day in advance became possible, providing the perfect opportunity to assess whether the venue retains its appeal once the noise has quietened.
Coastal Ambiance and Layout
The ocean views are primarily reserved for the front bar area, while the main dining room is situated at the rear. This layout initially seemed counterintuitive, considering how diners typically allocate their time and resources. However, in Cottesloe, where window-side tables at establishments like the OBH and The Cottesloe Hotel remain perpetually popular, this configuration proves entirely effective. Moreover, there truly isn't an undesirable seat in the entire venue. The interior design features gorgeous light coastal elements, vibrant artwork, and strategic pops of colour and greenery, all beautifully illuminated by natural light.
Extensive Beverage Selection
The drinks menu is impressively vast, encompassing wines, beers, thoughtfully crafted cocktails, and sake, reflecting the bar-first philosophy. During a school-night visit, the mocktail selection impressed, with the bartender expertly fulfilling a request for something both sour and fruity. The service exceeded expectations when an additional glass was offered simply because they had prepared too much.
Culinary Journey Across South-East Asia
The dining experience involved a delightful exploration of the South-East Asian inspired menu, progressing from bites to shared plates. The prawn toast spring rolls delivered an audibly crunchy texture, with the prawns maintaining a pleasing textural integrity rather than being over-processed. The accompanying nuoc cham sauce offered a sweet profile with welcome undertones of fragrant lemongrass.
The velvet eggplant truly lived up to its name, presenting a smooth and rich dish enhanced by luxurious satay butter and added texture from arare, which are toasted rice grains. The san choy bao provided a less traditional interpretation of the classic, featuring warm vegetables and small chicken pieces finished with a spicy sauce that delivered a satisfying level of heat.
Finally, the banana leaf–roasted fish of the day, which happened to be barramundi during this visit, was cooked to perfection. The flaky bites were beautifully balanced by a green sauce that introduced subtle curry flavours. Dish timing was impeccable, with each course arriving shortly after the previous one was finished, all served with genuine smiles by the friendly and attentive waitstaff.

It is easy to understand why Tigerfish emerged as the go-to destination for summer dining in Perth. The evening visit was calm, yet the diverse mix of girlfriends catching up, families dining together, and colleagues enjoying after-work drinks provided a glimpse of the vibrant atmosphere expected on a bustling weekend. The good times are likely to continue long after the hottest days have passed.

It comes as no surprise that Tigerfish was the standout spot of summer. The combination of great food, excellent service, and some of Perth's most attractive interiors creates a compelling dining experience.
