The streets of Applecross have been transformed into a breathtaking sea of violet, as the suburb's iconic jacaranda trees reach their spectacular peak spring bloom. A recent burst of sunshine has accelerated the natural display, carpeting footpaths and gardens in a vibrant purple hue.
A Suburban Spectacle Draws Locals and Tourists
For residents like Prem Malhi, who has lived in Applecross for over a decade, the jacarandas were a primary reason for choosing his home on Gairloch Street. "It's a beautiful tree-lined suburb," Mr Malhi said. "These jacarandas are the main, well one of the main reasons, we chose this street." He emphasised the value of the greenery, something he feels many newer suburbs lack.
His daughters, Zaara, 6, and Kyra, 7, have embraced the seasonal change, helping their father rake the fallen blossoms. According to Mr Malhi, the task is a joy for the girls because they love playing in the sea of purple petals.
Long-term resident Wendy McKeown, who has called Applecross home for 20 years, confirmed the area's magnetic pull during this period. "It makes me laugh, because about this time of year, we get busloads of tourists and people will come with little parasols and sit underneath our trees and have picnics," she said, describing the scene as "very cute."
Beauty With a Few Bee Stings
While the visual spectacle is undeniable, some residents note the trees come with minor challenges. Sylvanna and Mark Fowler, 18-year residents of the suburb, pointed out that cleaning their pool becomes more difficult and walking the dog requires caution due to bees hidden among the fallen petals.
Despite these small inconveniences, the Fowlers agree the beauty is worth it. "They look great but there are some negatives," Mr Fowler admitted, before quickly adding, "But it's worth it, all of the shade is just fantastic." Ms Fowler enjoys the view from their balcony, describing the scene across the street as a "beautiful vista."
Celebrating a Quarter Century of Purple
The stunning natural display has perfectly timed its arrival with a key community event. The Rotary Club of Applecross' annual Jacaranda Festival is set to take place this Sunday.
Now in its 25th year, the festival will run from 9.30am to 3.30pm along a section of Ardross Street at Applecross Village. The event promises a vibrant community gathering with more than 150 stalls, a dedicated gourmet food zone, and plenty of family-friendly entertainment, offering the perfect way to celebrate this unique Perth spring tradition.
