Authorities in Canberra are urgently appealing for information after a newborn baby was discovered outside a fire station in the city's south.
Infant Discovered in Conder
Just after 7am on Thursday morning, a newborn baby was found at the entrance of the South Tuggeranong Fire and Rescue Station in the suburb of Conder. The infant is believed to be less than a day old and was found with no visible injuries.
Emergency services were immediately called to the scene. Paramedics assessed the baby on-site before transporting the child to Canberra Hospital for further medical care, where the infant remains.
Police Concern for Mother's Welfare
ACT Policing has launched a public appeal, stating that their primary focus is the health and safety of the baby's mother. They have expressed deep concern for her wellbeing in the hours following the birth.
Police are strongly encouraging the mother to seek medical attention as soon as possible. "She should attend a hospital, ring an ambulance or contact police," a spokesperson said. They also asked the community to be vigilant, adding, "If you think a friend or family member may be the mother – please encourage them to seek medical help as soon as possible."
Public Assistance Requested
Investigators are asking for the public's help to piece together the events leading up to the discovery. They are particularly interested in speaking to anyone who may have witnessed any activity near the fire station overnight or in the early hours of Thursday morning.
Authorities have also requested that anyone with relevant dashcam footage from the area around the Conder fire station come forward. Information can be provided directly to police or anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
The discovery has shocked the local community, with the wellbeing of both the newborn and the mother at the forefront of the ongoing investigation.
