Finland Crowned World's Happiest Country for Ninth Straight Year
Despite sharing a 1340-kilometer border with Russia, Finland has once again secured the top spot in the United Nations' World Happiness Report, marking its ninth consecutive year as the world's happiest nation. The report, which surveyed approximately 100,000 participants from each country, highlights Finland's strong connection to nature and balanced lifestyle as key factors in its high happiness rankings.
Visit Finland Launches 'Chill Like a Finn' Competition
To celebrate this achievement, Visit Finland, the national tourism promoter, has announced a special contest offering travelers the chance to win a seven-day summer stay in Finnish Lakeland, one of Europe's largest lake regions. A spokesperson for Visit Finland explained, 'Experience the Finnish antidote to digital overload through the Chill Like a Finn challenge. For Finns, happiness is often built from simple routines that leave space to rest, reset, and reconnect with nature.'
The competition invites international applicants to explain why they could benefit from a summer reset, with selected participants and a plus one traveling to Finland to immerse themselves in local wellness rituals, such as sauna culture and tranquil days by the water. The contest closes on March 29, 2026, and details are available at visitfinland.com.
Social Media's Impact on Wellbeing Highlighted in Report
The 2026 World Happiness Report also sheds light on the negative effects of social media and constant connectivity on mental health, particularly among young users. It cites 'overwhelming evidence of severe and widespread' direct harms like cyberbullying and sextortion, as well as indirect harms such as depression. This comes as governments worldwide, including Australia, are considering or implementing laws to restrict social media use to protect younger populations.
Finland's approach to happiness emphasizes disconnecting from digital distractions and embracing outdoor activities, as seen in its vast forests, thousands of lakes, and peaceful cottage life. While the country is enhancing security with a 200-kilometer 'smart fence' along its Russian border, it continues to promote a lifestyle centered on nature and relaxation, bordered by Norway and Sweden with a long Baltic Sea coastline.
From kayaking in Saimaa to enjoying floating saunas in Lappeenranta, Finland offers numerous ways to unwind. The report and contest underscore a global trend towards prioritizing mental wellbeing through nature-based experiences and digital detoxes, making Finland a leading example in the pursuit of happiness.
