A Sydney family has recounted their harrowing experience of being locked down for 24 hours inside a Fiji resort as a powerful cyclone system, Cyclone Vaianu, wreaked havoc across the region. Katie Lowe and her family were compelled to take shelter in their beach hut on Vomo Island, a popular holiday destination, as intense winds and torrential rain lashed the area.
Intense Conditions and Family Resilience
"It's been a crazy 36 hours," Lowe stated, describing the ordeal that began on Monday night when they entered lockdown and were prohibited from leaving their room for a full day. The family huddled together as weather conditions deteriorated rapidly overnight, with winds escalating and rain pounding their beachfront accommodation.
"Monday night is when the winds really started to pick up. And then Tuesday morning, it was like Armageddon, really," she recalled. "The wind was just pelting into our little beach hut, and we're all huddled inside together." At one point, water began flooding into their room, prompting resort staff to drill into the door to secure it against the storm's fury.

Lowe expressed immense gratitude towards the Vomo Island resort team for their professional response during the crisis. Staff members braved the dangerous conditions, running between rooms to deliver food and check on guests throughout the lockdown period. "A massive thank you to the team at Vomo Island. I mean, they're just professionals," she said, adding humorously, "I don't know what was more interesting, being locked in a little beach hut with three kids and my husband, or actually riding out the cyclone."
Despite the frightening circumstances, the children remained relatively calm. One of the girls remarked, "It was like a really strong wind and very strong rain. We knew we were safe, but it was scary." This resilience highlights the family's ability to cope under extreme pressure.
Cyclone Vaianu and Regional Weather Threats
The severe weather was driven by Tropical Cyclone Vaianu, a category three system that formed near Fiji, bringing heavy rain and destructive winds as it tracked through the region. Vaianu is expected to move south later this week towards New Zealand. Concurrently, Cyclone Maila is strengthening near Papua New Guinea and is forecast to move towards far north Queensland by the weekend or early next week.
Authorities are closely monitoring both systems, with uncertainty surrounding Maila's potential strength if it approaches the Australian coast.
