Alleged Gunman Denies Shooting Man in Neck at Waratah

A man accused of shooting another individual in the neck in Newcastle has entered a plea of not guilty, with the case now proceeding to trial. Prosecutors allege that Angus Osborne, who was 21 at the time, discharged a firearm at a 36-year-old man in Waratah West on January 24, 2025.

Incident Details and Police Investigation

The incident came to light when the victim presented at Calvary Mater Hospital around 5am with a gunshot wound. He was subsequently transported to another hospital for treatment of a neck injury, where he was reported to be in stable condition. Newcastle police launched an investigation under Strike Force Fontana, establishing a crime scene at a residence in Waratah West.

Osborne was arrested the following day, on January 25, 2025, during a vehicle stop on Minmi Road at Maryland. During a search of the car, police allegedly discovered a firearm, ammunition, and other weapons, which were seized for forensic testing. Osborne was taken to Newcastle Police Station and formally charged.

Court Proceedings and Charges

In Newcastle Local Court last week, Osborne pleaded not guilty to multiple charges, including discharging a firearm with intent to cause grievous bodily harm. He also denied charges related to possessing a shortened firearm and ammunition without proper authority. However, Osborne did plead guilty to possessing knuckledusters without consent on January 25, 2025, at Maryland.

Magistrate Janine Lacey has committed Osborne to stand trial in the Newcastle District Court. He is scheduled to appear next month to formally enter pleas and receive a trial date. The case highlights ongoing efforts by law enforcement to address violent crimes in the region.
