Child Rapist Jailed for Brutal Sex Attack on Woman Walking Home
Mark Anthony Junior Unchango, a man with a history of child rape, has been sentenced to 10 years in prison for a violent sexual assault on a woman as she walked home from Whitfords train station. The attack occurred just five weeks after his release from prison, where he was serving time for raping two children.
Details of the Horrific Nighttime Assault
On the night of December 19, 2024, the victim, a woman in her 40s, noticed Unchango following her in the darkness. She texted her husband to say she would be home soon, but moments later, Unchango startled her by asking about a bus. Without warning, the 21-year-old, who was under the influence of methamphetamine and alcohol, pushed her into bushes and repeatedly punched her as she screamed and fought back.
Prosecutor Sarah Jessup described how the victim offered her laptop, phone, and bank cards, and mentioned her children in a desperate attempt to dissuade him. However, Unchango, who was much larger, overpowered her and raped her three times during a 10-minute ordeal. District Court Judge Nicholas Egan noted that the victim did all she could to prevent the attack, but Unchango callously ignored her pleas.
Escape and Aftermath of the Attack
The woman managed to break free and ran into a busy road, where a motorist picked her up and brought her home. Judge Egan stated that Unchango would have continued the assault had she not escaped. The judge described the offending as brutal, vicious, and savage, marking a dramatic escalation from Unchango's significant criminal record, which began when he was just 11 years old.
Ms Jessup highlighted the monumental degradation suffered by the victim, who was forced to facilitate the act out of fear for her life. The ongoing impact on her is described as not capable of being captured in words. Unchango, now 23, held his head in his hands for most of the sentencing hearing, after an unsuccessful attempt to have his name suppressed.
Sentencing and Risk of Reoffending
Judge Egan found Unchango to be at high risk of reoffending, citing his history of sexual offenses against both children and adults. The 10-year sentence was deemed warranted, with eligibility for parole after serving eight years. This case underscores the severe consequences of violent sexual crimes and the importance of court-ordered supervision programs in monitoring high-risk offenders.
