Man Admits to Christmas Day One-Punch Assault Outside Eastern Suburbs Pub
A 20-year-old man has pleaded guilty to a one-punch attack that occurred outside an eastern suburbs pub on Christmas Day, with the incident captured on CCTV and a Snapchat video from his phone. Brodie Jake Dewar appeared at the Armadale Magistrates Court on Wednesday, facing charges of assault occasioning bodily harm for the alleged assault of Luis Carlos Galvez Gallego, 40, outside the Kalamunda Hotel.
Court Proceedings and Evidence Presented
During the hearing, Magistrate Justin Geoghegan asked Dewar how he intended to plead, to which Dewar responded, "Guilty your honour." The court was shown CCTV footage depicting Dewar walking with Gallego in a carpark before throwing an unprovoked punch. Gallego is seen falling to the ground and striking his head on the pavement, though he did not sustain any major injuries from the attack.
Additionally, a Snapchat video obtained from Dewar’s phone following the assault shows Gallego unconscious on the ground. In the video, Dewar can be heard saying, "Don’t hit on my younger sister next time brother. Keep snoring." This evidence played a crucial role in the case, highlighting the severity of the incident.
Sentencing and Support Details
Bail was extended for Dewar, and he is scheduled to be sentenced on May 6. Outside the court, Dewar was supported by nearly a dozen loved ones but did not speak to waiting media. The case underscores ongoing concerns about one-punch attacks in the community, particularly during festive periods.
This incident serves as a reminder of the legal consequences for such assaults, with the court process moving forward as Dewar awaits his sentencing date. The community and authorities continue to monitor such cases to promote safety and accountability.
