Trump Taps Keith Sonderling for Labor Secretary Role
Trump Nominates Keith Sonderling Labor Secretary

President Donald Trump has nominated Keith Sonderling, a Republican member of the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC), to serve as the next Secretary of Labor, the White House announced Tuesday.

Sonderling's Background and Qualifications

Sonderling, 45, has been a commissioner on the EEOC since 2020, where he focused on workplace discrimination issues. Prior to that, he served as deputy assistant secretary for policy at the Department of Labor under the Trump administration. He holds a law degree from the University of Miami and has worked in private practice and as a congressional aide.

If confirmed by the Senate, Sonderling would replace Eugene Scalia, who stepped down in January. The Labor Department oversees workplace safety, wage and hour laws, union relations, and job training programs.

Reactions and Next Steps

Labor unions and worker advocacy groups have expressed mixed reactions. AFL-CIO President Richard Trumka said, “We look forward to reviewing Sonderling's record and hearing his views on protecting workers during the pandemic.” Meanwhile, business groups like the U.S. Chamber of Commerce praised the nomination, citing Sonderling's experience with regulatory reform.

The Senate Health, Education, Labor, and Pensions Committee will hold confirmation hearings in the coming weeks. Sonderling is expected to face questions on enforcement of workplace safety rules, minimum wage increases, and gig economy regulations.
