Originally slated to conclude at the end of April, the free public transport initiative will now run until June 1. During this period, Victorians can enjoy complimentary access to trains, trams, and buses across the state. Following this extension, from June 1 until the end of 2024, fares will be reduced to half price, offering substantial savings for daily commuters.
Financial Impact and Savings for Commuters
Under the new half-price fare system, a full daily fare will cost $5.70 instead of the standard $11.40. This reduction is projected to save the average daily commuter more than $850 over the course of the year. The government estimates that the state will incur a loss of approximately $71 million due to the suspension of the transport ticketing and fare system, as highlighted by Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan last month.
Permanent Free Travel for Specific Groups
In addition to the temporary fare reductions, public transport will remain permanently free for certain groups. This includes individuals under the age of 18 and holders of special passes, ensuring ongoing accessibility for vulnerable and young commuters.
