A murder investigation has rocked the regional community of Armidale after police discovered the body of an elderly man at a local residence, leading to the arrest of a 25-year-old occupant.

Discovery of Deceased Man

Emergency services rushed to a property on Markham Street in Armidale on October 13 following concerning welfare reports. Upon arrival, officers made a grim discovery - the body of a 78-year-old man was found inside the home.

Police Investigation and Arrest

New South Wales police immediately established a crime scene and launched a comprehensive investigation through Strike Force Kastelic, involving specialist homicide detectives. The investigation took a significant turn when detectives arrested a 25-year-old man who lives at the property at approximately 8.10am on Wednesday in Armidale.

Following the discovery of the body, the younger man had initially been taken to hospital for further assessment before becoming the prime suspect in the case. After extensive police inquiries, he was formally charged with murder.

Court Proceedings Begin

The accused has been refused bail and was scheduled to appear at Bail Division Court 5 on Wednesday. He remains in custody after being processed at Armidale Police Station, where he was formally charged following his arrest.
