Wollongong Council Unveils Plans for New Coastal Pathway and Enhanced Parking
Wollongong City Council has announced a significant proposal to extend the popular Grand Pacific Walk, with a new one-kilometre coastal path planned for the northern suburbs. The project aims to create a seamless connection between Austinmer and Coledale, enhancing recreational access for both residents and visitors.
Details of the Proposed Pathway and Car Park Improvements
The council is currently seeking public feedback on the proposed section, which will run from the northern end of Coledale's Sharky Beach car park down to Headland Avenue in Austinmer. This new segment will link directly with the existing section of the walk currently under construction at Austinmer, forming a continuous coastal route.
In addition to the pathway, the project includes formalising the eastern side of Sharky Beach car park to create eighty-three designated parking spaces. This upgrade is designed to improve accessibility and accommodate the growing number of users visiting the area.
Design Specifications and Future Expansion Plans
The new shared paths will be constructed to a width of three metres, providing ample space for both pedestrians and cyclists to coexist safely. An exception will be made at Sharky's car park, where the path will expand to four metres to handle higher traffic volumes.
Council representatives have also indicated that planning is underway for further extensions of the Grand Pacific Walk beyond Coledale. "We are currently exploring options for this stretch, and we remain committed to delivering the full Grand Pacific Walk," a spokesperson confirmed, highlighting the long-term vision for the coastal trail.
Community Engagement and Feedback Opportunities
Residents and stakeholders are encouraged to participate in the consultation process, which remains open until March 1. To facilitate direct engagement, a pop-up information session will be held at the Sharky Beach car park on February 21 from 9am to 11am.
This initiative reflects Wollongong City Council's ongoing commitment to enhancing public infrastructure and promoting active lifestyles through improved coastal access and connectivity.
