Construction is officially underway for the new Chung Wah Community Centre in Bentley, marking a significant milestone for Western Australia's culturally diverse communities. A recent sod-turning ceremony at the site on the corner of Hedley Street and Nyamup Way celebrated the commencement of this long-awaited project.
A Hub for Community and Culture
Once completed, the two-storey community purpose building will offer a wide range of facilities designed to serve local residents. These include a versatile multipurpose function space, a dedicated youth area, and spaces for daycare and playgroup activities. The centre will also feature office spaces, meeting rooms, and toilet facilities to accommodate various community needs.
Expanding Aged Care and Community Services
A key component of the facility will be the Chung Wah Community Care Centre, which will provide essential aged care services specifically tailored for elderly members from Chinese and Southeast Asian backgrounds. This initiative is expected to allow the Chung Wah Association to broaden its current programs and better address the future requirements of culturally and linguistically diverse (CaLD) groups in the region.
Historical Context and Land Transfer
The building will occupy part of a 27-hectare parcel of land that was initially proposed for a large-scale development, including 1500 homes and an economic injection of over $1 billion into WA's economy. However, this project stalled due to a lack of suitable developers. In August 2023, the State Government announced the transfer of this land to the Chung Wah Association, aligning with the broader Bentley redevelopment project.
Legacy of the Chung Wah Association
Established in 1909, the Chung Wah Association is Western Australia's largest and oldest not-for-profit CaLD association. Its existing services encompass Chung Wah Community Care, various cultural and interest groups, and Chinese language classes held at six school campuses, including one in Geraldton. Demographic data highlights the growing need for such services, with over 28,000 WA residents born in China—a 5 per cent increase since 2016—and more than 116,000 West Australians claiming Chinese ancestry.
Government Support and Community Impact
The State Government has backed the association's project through both land provision and $10 million in funding, fulfilling an election commitment. Premier Roger Cook emphasised the significant contributions made by WA's Chinese communities to the state's development. Multicultural Interests Minister Tony Buti described the centre as more than just a building, stating it will act as a vibrant hub for connection, cultural celebration, and language learning for future generations.
Local Endorsement and Future Prospects
Victoria Park MLA Hannah Beazley expressed enthusiasm for the facility, noting it will be a fantastic addition to the Victoria Park area. The new Chung Wah Community Centre is poised to become a cornerstone for fostering inclusivity, supporting elderly care, and enhancing community engagement across Bentley and surrounding suburbs.
