Council Debunks Helensburgh Apartment Rumours, Confirms New Community Centre Plans
Council denies Helensburgh apartment block rumours

Wollongong City Council has moved decisively to quash persistent online speculation claiming the Helensburgh Community Centre is slated for demolition to make way for apartment buildings.

Social Media Sparks Community Concern

The rumours gained traction through a post in a local Facebook group that directly questioned residents: "Did you know Council are planning to knock down the existing Helensburgh community centre and build apartments there?" The post notably emphasised that the land is designated as community land, amplifying concerns among locals about the potential loss of public space.

A council spokesperson has firmly labelled these claims as "incorrect," providing clarity on the facility's actual status and future. The community centre has been closed since 2021 due to significant mould and water inflow issues that rendered the building unsuitable for public use.

The Official Timeline for a New Facility

Following essential repairs completed earlier this year, the council has reopened the Helensburgh Community Rooms adjacent to Walker Street. These rooms serve as a temporary meeting space while plans progress for a much more substantial project.

The council's confirmed strategy involves constructing a new Helensburgh Community Centre & Library on the north side of the existing library. This new facility is designed to eventually replace both the old centre and the temporary community rooms.

Community consultation has occurred several times already, with the council planning to present concept designs for the new building in early 2026. If this timeline holds, construction is scheduled for completion by the end of 2028.

Uncertain Future for the Old Site

While the plans for the new centre are clear, the fate of the land currently occupied by the old community centre and community rooms remains undecided. The council spokesperson confirmed that "no decision has been made as to the future use" of the Council-owned portion of this land.

This official statement directly counters the social media narrative and reassures residents that the council's immediate focus is on delivering a modern, purpose-built community facility rather than residential development on the cherished community land.
