North Wollongong's Diggies Cafe Faces 6-Month Closure for Sea Wall Project
Diggies Cafe to close for 6 months over council works

The beloved Diggies cafe and kiosk at North Wollongong beach is set for an extended shutdown, with closure doors scheduled to remain locked for at least six months starting February 2026.

Council Project Forces Extended Shutdown

Wollongong City Council has confirmed the popular coastal establishment must close to facilitate essential building repairs and Stage 2 sea wall construction at North Wollongong. Council documents reveal the timing has been deliberately coordinated with the sea wall project, which is slated to commence in February next year.

During Monday night's council meeting, councillors will consider approving a new five-year lease for the current operator, North Kiosk. The business has been operating under holdover provisions since its previous lease expired in April 2023.

Substantial Upgrades and Rental Increase

The current operator has occupied the prime beachfront location since 2003 and has invested significantly in improving the premises. Council papers note the establishment underwent substantial enhancements with full development approval, including a complete commercial kitchen fit-out and dining area extension.

The popular alfresco deck, offering stunning views of North Wollongong beach, the harbour and lighthouse, was part of these improvements. The new lease agreement proposes a 132 percent rental uplift, providing a substantial financial boost to council coffers.

Coordinated Reopening Planned

Council hopes to synchronise the reopening of both the completed sea wall and the revamped Diggies cafe and kiosk. Three companies initially bid during the tender process, with North Kiosk emerging as the successful operator.

The extended closure period of six months or potentially longer will allow for comprehensive construction works that cannot proceed safely while the popular eatery remains operational. The shutdown represents a significant disruption for both the business and its loyal customers who frequent the iconic North Wollongong location.
