Elizabeth Baillie Precinct's $8.1m Revamp Opens After Decade-Long Transformation
After more than a decade in the making, the transformed Elizabeth Baillie Precinct will finally open its gates to the public on March 14 with a major free family event. Located on Albany Highway in Victoria Park, this $8.1 million revitalisation project represents a significant milestone for the local community, blending heritage preservation with modern amenities.
Community Celebration and Event Details
The Town of Victoria Park will host a community event on Saturday, March 14, from 6pm to 9pm, marking the official opening of the precinct. The evening program will feature outdoor circus performances in the new amphitheatre, roving entertainers, children's activities, and food from the new on-site hospitality operator, Baillie Hill. This event aims to welcome residents and visitors alike to experience the upgraded space firsthand.
Heritage and Modern Activation
Victoria Park Mayor Karen Vernon emphasised that the redevelopment was inspired by the community's desire to unlock the potential of the heritage buildings and surrounding parkland. "This project balances heritage preservation with modern activation," she said. "The restoration of Elizabeth Baillie House to its former architectural glory preserves a unique part of our history, while its conversion into a modern hospitality and entertainment venue is complemented by the beautiful upgrade of Elizabeth Baillie Park." Mayor Vernon added that seeing this vision come to life is a proud moment for the council and community, reflecting a commitment to building welcoming, community-focused spaces.
New Facilities and Inclusivity Features
The upgrade introduces a suite of new facilities designed with accessibility and inclusivity at their core. Key additions include:
- The Mildred Creak Playground, purpose-built for neurodiverse children in collaboration with Autism Association WA.
- A fully accessible Changing Places facility and upgraded amenities.
- A new outdoor amphitheatre for cultural performances and community events.
- Nature play spaces, accessible pathways, seating, and BBQ facilities.
- Reticulated turf and a growing urban forest.
These features ensure the precinct caters to people of all ages and abilities, fostering connection and a sense of belonging.
Funding and Support
The park upgrade was supported by a $2.2 million grant from Lotterywest, which contributed to both the Mildred Creak Playground and the Changing Places facility. The broader precinct redevelopment also received $4 million in funding from the Australian Government. Lotterywest CEO Colin Smith stated, "A Lotterywest grant of $2.2 million has enabled a purpose-built playground where families and community members of all abilities can connect, play and feel a true sense of belonging." He highlighted that the precinct will strengthen community connection in Victoria Park by providing an enriching experience that celebrates the site's heritage.
