Jason Gioffre, a convicted drug trafficker from Geelong, has launched a fresh appeal against his conviction, citing new evidence and alleged legal errors during his trial. The appeal, filed in the Victorian Court of Appeal, seeks to overturn the guilty verdict handed down in 2022 for trafficking a commercial quantity of methamphetamine.
Background of the case
Gioffre was arrested in 2020 after police intercepted a drug shipment destined for Geelong. He was found guilty of trafficking approximately 1.5 kilograms of methamphetamine, with a street value exceeding $1 million. The original sentence imposed was 12 years' imprisonment, with a non-parole period of eight years.
Grounds for appeal
Gioffre's legal team argues that the trial judge made several errors, including improper admission of evidence and failure to properly instruct the jury. Additionally, they claim new evidence has emerged that could cast doubt on the prosecution's case. The appeal hearing is expected to take place later this year.
Prosecutors maintain that the original verdict was sound and will oppose the appeal. The case has drawn significant attention in Geelong due to the scale of the drug operation and Gioffre's prior criminal history.
