Kiama's Havilah Place aged care centre demolished

Seven months after demolition commenced, Kiama's Havilah Place aged care centre has been completely removed. The 40-bed nursing home and 28-bed hostel, which opened in 1979 thanks to community donations, a federal grant, and land donated by a local businessman, closed in 2019 when the Blue Haven Bonaira site opened.

Demolition Details

Following closure, the building deteriorated due to mould, vandalism, and structural damage, forcing Kiama Council to incur ongoing security and maintenance costs. Last year, the council decided to demolish the structure and awarded a contract to TCE Contracting for removal and site clearance.

Council's Director of Infrastructure and Operations, Darren Brady, confirmed the demolition proceeded without issues. He noted that a newly released time-lapse video captures the process. "Council sincerely thanks the Blue Haven Terralong residents for their patience during the demolition process," Mr Brady said. "The timelapse provides a really great digital memento on the public record of the rehabilitation of the site."

Future of the Site

No final decisions have been made regarding the long-term use of the land. However, clearing the site allows the council to explore various options, including parkland or housing. The council will continue with plans to subdivide the site from Blue Haven Terralong, which will facilitate any future development.
