Man charged over six-hour knifepoint carjacking spree

A 35-year-old man has been charged after police tracked an alleged six-hour knifepoint carjacking spree during which he is accused of threatening more than a dozen drivers with a knife while attempting to steal vehicles.

Alleged carjacking spree begins

Police allege the man threatened a woman with a knife during the theft of a blue BMW coupe from a home in Chelmer, Brisbane, at approximately 8am on Wednesday. The Queensland Police Service (QPS) confirmed that the woman was not physically injured during the incident.

Second carjacking and injury

The stolen BMW was spotted on Kittyhawk Drive in Chermside around 1.45pm, where police allege the driver got out and stole a white Audi A1. The driver of the Audi, a 67-year-old man, was injured during the incident after allegedly being dragged along the road. He was taken to hospital in a stable condition.

Police pursuit

Polair tracked the stolen Audi as it travelled at speed through multiple suburbs, including Chermside and Stafford. Police allege the driver crossed onto the wrong side of Gympie Road during the pursuit. During the chase, the man allegedly attempted to steal at least five more vehicles at knifepoint.

Arrest and charges

The Spring Hill man was arrested about 1.52pm near the intersection of South Pine Road and Farrington Street at Alderley while allegedly attempting to steal another vehicle. He has since been charged with multiple offences, including armed robbery, dangerous operation of a motor vehicle, unlawful use of a motor vehicle, and unlawful entry of a motor vehicle. The man has also been charged with contravening a domestic violence order and is due to appear before Brisbane Magistrates Court on Thursday.
