Wyndham Council Deploys Private Security After Halloween Crime Spree
Private Guards Patrol Melbourne's West After Crime Blitz

Private Security Hits the Streets in Melbourne's West

In a significant response to a major crime wave, Wyndham Council has taken the extraordinary step of deploying private security guards to patrol suburban streets. This decision comes directly after a targeted police blitz across Melbourne's western suburbs resulted in more than a dozen arrests over the Halloween period.

The six-month trial, which saw guards begin patrols in Truganina last weekend, was initiated after residents repeatedly expressed serious concerns for their personal safety. This move by a local council to directly fund street-level security is a clear indicator of the heightened anxiety within the community.

Dramatic Police Operation Unfolds

The catalyst for this action was a dramatic two-day police crackdown, captured in part by the police air wing. One intense incident involved a driver who was accused of ramming a police car before fleeing on foot. The suspect was eventually apprehended by officers after hiding in a resident's front yard.

"They charged him into the gate, so that’s why there was damage there," recounted Truganina resident Salmaan Nagoormira, describing the scene near his home.

In a separate event in Wyndham Vale, the police helicopter observed a stolen car become bogged. Three men emerged from the vehicle, grabbing their belongings before attempting to escape on foot. The pursuit saw one of the individuals tumble down a hill before all three were successfully rounded up by police. A similar incident in Tarneit contributed to a total of 15 arrests during the Halloween weekend operation.

Community Fear and Council Justification

The crime spree has left many locals feeling vulnerable. "I feel like we are no longer safe in this suburb," stated resident Gary Magno, echoing a sentiment felt by others in the area.

Wyndham Councillor Preet Singh publicly defended the council's unprecedented decision to hire private security. "Even though it’s not the council’s responsibility, we have taken an extraordinary step to step in so the community can feel safe," Singh explained, highlighting the gap the council is attempting to fill.

Residents have pointed to broader issues of police resourcing, noting that local stations are sometimes shut on Sundays and citing instances of unchecked mail piling up at station doors. While Victorian Premier Jacinta Allan confirmed that police numbers have been increased in the Wyndham area, the community's concerns persist.

Salmaan Nagoormira voiced a question on many minds: "Do we need to put more patrols, more officers, to actually make sure things like this don’t happen anymore?"

Authorities have announced that more of these intensive two-day police operations are planned for the Wyndham area as they continue to address the ongoing crime issues troubling the community.
