Wollongong to Host 900+ Local Government Leaders for Major 2026 Conference
Wollongong Wins Major Local Government Conference 2026

Wollongong has secured another major event that will fill hotel rooms and boost the local economy when it hosts hundreds of local government leaders in late 2026.

Major Conference Coming to Wollongong

The Illawarra region is set to welcome up to 900 delegates for the Local Government NSW annual conference from November 22-24, 2026. The three-day event will take place at the WIN Entertainment Centre, marking another significant win for the city's events calendar.

While it might not attract the same public spectators as recent major sporting events like the World Triathlon Championship Finals or UCI Road World Championships, the conference represents a substantial economic opportunity for local accommodation providers and hospitality businesses.

Economic Boost for Local Businesses

Hotels throughout Wollongong, particularly those near the WIN Entertainment Centre, are expected to be at capacity during the conference period. The influx of mayors, councillors, and local government staff from across New South Wales will provide a welcome boost to the region's economy during the three-day gathering.

Wollongong Lord Mayor Tania Brown expressed excitement about showcasing the city to delegates from across the state. "Nestled between Merrigong, the Escarpment, and Gadhu, the ocean, our city on Dharawal Country is blessed with world-class beaches, a diverse hospitality sector, and a thriving economy driven by industry and innovation," Cr Brown said.

Proven Track Record in Hosting Major Events

Wollongong has demonstrated its capability to host significant international events, having successfully managed the World Triathlon Championship Finals in October that attracted 6,000 athletes and thousands more spectators, followed by the 2022 UCI Road World Championships that drew global audiences.

Cr Brown highlighted the city's growing reputation as an events destination, noting "The other thing about Wollongong is we know how to put on a show."

The city's development prospects were also emphasized, with the West Dapto urban release area identified as one of the fastest growing residential areas in the state outside of Sydney.

Recognition from Local Government Leaders

Outgoing LGNSW president Phillis Miller, who also serves as Mayor of Forbes, praised Wollongong's selection as host city. "It's a dynamic, forward-thinking city with outstanding venues, a proud local community and a strong commitment to sustainability - all the hallmarks of a perfect conference host," Cr Miller stated.

She specifically highlighted the WIN Entertainment Centre as "a wonderful venue for networking, debate and shared learning on the big issues facing our sector."

The conference will provide a platform for local government representatives to discuss pressing issues affecting communities across New South Wales, while simultaneously delivering economic benefits to the Wollongong region through delegate spending on accommodation, dining, and local services.
