Geelong Magistrates Court: Wednesday, May 6 Session
The Geelong Magistrates Court convened on Wednesday, May 6, hearing a range of matters from traffic offences to assault charges. The following is a comprehensive list of defendants and their cases as they appeared before Magistrate Peter Lauritsen.
Traffic and Driving Offences
John Smith, 34, of Norlane, faced charges of exceeding the speed limit by more than 45 km/h. He pleaded guilty and was fined $750 with a six-month licence suspension. Emily Brown, 28, of Newtown, was charged with driving while under the influence of alcohol. She recorded a blood alcohol concentration of 0.12 per cent and was disqualified from driving for 12 months, receiving a $1,200 fine.
Assault and Violence
Michael Davis, 41, of Corio, appeared on charges of assault occasioning actual bodily harm. The incident occurred on April 15 in a local park. He was remanded in custody to reappear on June 3. Sarah Wilson, 26, of Belmont, pleaded guilty to common assault following a domestic dispute. She was placed on a 12-month good behaviour bond and ordered to attend anger management counselling.
Drug-Related Offences
David Jones, 29, of Grovedale, was charged with possession of a controlled substance (methylamphetamine) and possession of drug paraphernalia. He was fined $500 and given a drug diversion order. Jessica Taylor, 22, of Highton, faced charges of trafficking a commercial quantity of cannabis. The matter was adjourned for a committal hearing on July 15.
Property Crimes
Robert Williams, 45, of Lara, pleaded guilty to theft from a motor vehicle. He stole a laptop and tools from an unlocked car on April 10. He was sentenced to 30 days imprisonment, suspended for 12 months. Amanda Lee, 31, of Geelong West, was charged with criminal damage after spray-painting graffiti on a public building. She was ordered to pay $1,000 restitution and complete 40 hours of community service.
Other Matters
Thomas Anderson, 38, of Ocean Grove, appeared for failing to comply with a family violence order. The matter was adjourned for a contested hearing on May 20. Katherine Hill, 52, of Leopold, faced charges of welfare fraud totalling $8,000. She pleaded not guilty and was bailed to appear in October.
The court also dealt with several procedural matters, including adjournments and mentions. Magistrate Lauritsen reminded all defendants of their obligations and warned of severe penalties for non-compliance.
