Regulatory Action for Neglected Water Park

Access Canberra has initiated formal action against the owner of the Big Splash water park in Macquarie, declaring he has failed to adequately repair and maintain the popular facility. This development comes less than a day after the owner confirmed the park would remain closed for the entire summer season.

Failure to Comply with Order

The territory government issued a Controlled Activity Order to compel necessary works, but authorities state compliance has not been satisfactory. Access Canberra released a statement on Friday morning, confirming it has commenced potential regulatory action concerning the use provisions of the site's lease.

The water park was purchased in 2021 by Translink Management Group, led by Songnan "Morris" Huang. By late 2024, the facility was largely abandoned, leaving it vulnerable to vandalism and deterioration.

Potential Penalties and Consequences

Access Canberra has not specified whether it will pursue immediate penalties against the owner. However, under the Planning Act, potential consequences for non-compliance are significant. These include:

  • Infringement notices of $1200
  • Maximum penalties of $9600 for individuals or $48,600 for corporations
  • Possible termination of the lease

Authorities are also investigating whether the owner violated lease requirements by keeping Big Splash closed to the public last summer and announcing its continued closure for the upcoming season.

Access Canberra concluded its statement by noting it will be making no further comment on the ongoing matter at this time.
