Former BGC Lawyer Jailed for 9 Years Over Child Sex Abuse Crimes
Ex-BGC lawyer gets 9 years for child sex offences

A former lawyer for construction giant BGC has been sentenced to nine years behind bars for multiple child sex abuse offences that occurred during a disturbing two-month crime spree.

Predatory Behaviour and Horrific Crimes

Ryan Richard Hawkins, 42, faced the District Court of Western Australia on Wednesday morning where he learned his fate for 26 separate child sex offences committed between March and May last year. The court heard harrowing details of Hawkins' predatory conduct against a young victim, with Judge Nicholas Egan describing crimes that would leave everyone "but paedophiles" speechless.

The former legal professional engaged with another sexual predator who has also pleaded guilty to involvement in the abuse. Hawkins distributed material containing his heinous acts, sharing the content with other predators through online channels.

Shocking Fantasies and Drug Use

Evidence presented to the court revealed Hawkins had discussed disturbing fantasies with another person about administering sleeping pills and intoxicating a child with methamphetamine. While Judge Egan noted there was no proof Hawkins had acted on these specific plans, they demonstrated the depth of his predatory mindset.

The court also heard that Hawkins had been using methamphetamine behind his partner's back, with his partner reportedly shocked by the extent of his criminal behaviour.

Judge's Strong Condemnation

Judge Egan delivered scathing remarks about Hawkins' conduct, particularly noting his position as a former lawyer and officer of the court. His behaviour fell "well below" community expectations, according to the judge.

Referring to the exploitation material - which included more than 1000 photos and videos - Judge Egan stated he saw "nothing other than the pale death of innocence" of the victims involved.

Despite the gravity of his crimes, the judge acknowledged Hawkins had pleaded guilty to all offences at the earliest opportunity, which was considered in sentencing.

Sentence and Community Impact

Hawkins received a total prison sentence of nine years, with his earliest possible parole date set for April 2031. The court ordered the destruction of any devices containing abuse material in his possession.

The case has sent shockwaves through multiple communities where Hawkins had been actively involved. Beyond his legal work for BGC, he had served in prominent roles including:

  • Involvement with North Cottesloe Surf Life Saving Club
  • Former director of Little Athletics WA
  • Board member of charity Miner's Promise

This sentencing follows previous legal trouble for Hawkins, who was fined $400 in August last year for possessing methamphetamine and drug paraphernalia.
