A convicted paedophile and former magistrate is set to be released from prison on home detention next month when his sentence concludes, despite ongoing legal efforts to keep him behind bars indefinitely.
Who is Peter Liddy?
Peter Liddy, 83, is one of South Australia's most infamous child sex offenders. He was sentenced to prison in 2001 for the sexual abuse of four boys between 1983 and 1986. He has remained incarcerated since that time, with his prison term scheduled to end on June 4.
Earlier this year, Attorney-General Kyam Maher lodged an application seeking Liddy's indefinite detention, arguing that he should not be released into the community. Liddy's legal team asked the Supreme Court to permanently halt that application, but the court declined to shelve the matter.
Court ruling on release
While the legal battle continues, the court has ruled that Liddy will be released from custody — at least temporarily — and placed on home detention. Under the order, he will be subject to strict conditions, including electronic monitoring and restricted internet access.
Further submissions on the state's push for his indefinite detention will be heard later this year.
