An inmate at Western Plains Correctional Centre near Geelong has been rushed to hospital in a serious condition after an attack at the prison.
Incident Details
The assault occurred on Tuesday afternoon, with emergency services called to the facility around 2:30 pm. Paramedics treated the male inmate at the scene before transporting him to University Hospital Geelong. He remains in a serious but stable condition.
Police Investigation
Victoria Police have confirmed they are investigating the incident. A crime scene has been established at the prison, and detectives are speaking with witnesses. No charges have been laid at this stage.
The Western Plains Correctional Centre is a maximum-security prison housing male offenders. The attack is the latest in a series of violent incidents at Victorian prisons this year.
Prison authorities have not released details about the nature of the attack or the weapon used. The Department of Justice and Community Safety stated that the incident is being handled in accordance with standard procedures and that security has been reviewed.
