Matthew Hollebone has pleaded guilty in Newcastle Local Court to a string of offences committed during a crime spree that terrorised the city. The 32-year-old appeared before Magistrate Ian Rodgers on Monday, where he admitted to 14 charges, including aggravated break-and-enter, stealing motor vehicles, and receiving stolen goods.
Details of the crime spree
The offences occurred between January and April this year, targeting homes and businesses across Newcastle and surrounding suburbs. Hollebone was arrested in May after a police investigation linked him to several incidents. Among the charges, he admitted to breaking into a home in Mayfield, stealing a car from a driveway in Hamilton, and taking electronics from a business in Wickham.
Impact on victims
Police prosecutor Sergeant Sarah Jones told the court that the crimes had caused significant distress to victims. “These were not opportunistic offences; they were planned and targeted. The victims have suffered financial loss and emotional trauma,” she said. One victim, a single mother from Mayfield, reported feeling unsafe in her own home after the break-in.
Defence lawyer Mark Andrews argued that Hollebone’s actions were driven by a drug addiction. “My client has struggled with substance abuse for many years. He is deeply remorseful and seeks help,” Andrews said. The court heard that Hollebone had been in custody since his arrest and was willing to enter a rehabilitation program.
Sentencing adjourned
Magistrate Rodgers adjourned the sentencing to allow for a pre-sentence report. He warned Hollebone that imprisonment was likely given the seriousness of the offences. “You have caused considerable harm to the community. The court will consider all options, but you should expect a custodial sentence,” Rodgers said.
Hollebone will remain in custody until his next court appearance in August. The case has highlighted the ongoing issue of property crime in Newcastle, with police urging residents to secure their homes and report suspicious activity.
