A major police operation is underway in North Queensland after a prisoner escaped from a low-security correctional facility on Tuesday morning.
Jared Carrara, a 30-year-old inmate, fled the Townsville prison farm around 9:30 am on February 13, 2024, triggering an immediate response from Queensland Corrective Services and Queensland Police.
The Escape and Immediate Response
Authorities confirmed that Carrara was working within the prison farm's grounds when he managed to breach security protocols and escape the facility. The Townsville prison farm operates as a low-security annex of the Stuart Correctional Centre, housing minimum-security prisoners who typically have approaching release dates.
Following the escape, Queensland Police issued a public alert describing Carrara as Caucasian in appearance, approximately 170cm tall with a solid build. He has brown hair and blue eyes, and was last seen wearing a high-visibility shirt and shorts at the time of his disappearance.
Community Warning and Police Action
Police have urged members of the public to remain vigilant but cautioned against approaching the escaped prisoner if spotted. Instead, they've requested that people immediately contact authorities with any relevant information.
"We are urging anyone who sees Jared Carrara or has information regarding his current whereabouts not to approach him but to immediately contact police," a Queensland Police spokesperson stated.
The search operation involves multiple police units conducting ground searches in the areas surrounding the prison farm, with additional resources deployed to track the escapee's movements.

Queensland Corrective Services has launched an internal investigation into the circumstances surrounding Carrara's escape from the minimum-security facility. Such incidents are considered rare within the low-security prison system, which typically houses inmates deemed to pose lower risks to community safety.
