A Wollongong man has lost his previously clean criminal record after being convicted for a violent domestic incident where he hurled a cigarette lighter at a woman during a heated argument over child discipline. The 25-year-old appeared in Wollongong Local Court on January 22, where he pleaded guilty to multiple charges stemming from the December altercation.
Violent Altercation Over Child Discipline
The confrontation erupted on the morning of December 13 at a North Wollongong family home. According to court documents, the victim was disciplining her child when the man woke and began yelling at her, accusing her of being unreasonable towards the child. The situation quickly escalated into physical violence.
Lighter Thrown During Heated Exchange
During the argument, the man pushed the woman out of the front door and then threw a cigarette lighter directly at her head. The impact caused a small cut next to her eye, resulting in actual bodily harm. Feeling threatened and outnumbered by the man and another relative present in the home, the victim briefly armed herself with a pair of scissors for protection before dropping them and calling emergency services.
Police Intervention and Arrest
When police arrived at the scene, they could hear yelling coming from inside the residence. Officers encountered an argumentative and aggressive man who refused to cooperate with their instructions. The situation required police to handcuff him on the ground after he thrashed his body around during the arrest. He was subsequently taken to Wollongong Police Station for processing.
Court Proceedings and Sentencing
During sentencing, the court heard that unresolved relationship stressors contributed to the man's violent reaction. His defence noted that his "brain is still maturing" given his age of 25, but Magistrate B Robinson emphasized that domestic violence warrants serious consequences.
"There's too many men hurting women in their life. Have you thought about that and how you might react in the future? Sometimes you've just got to walk away," Magistrate Robinson told the defendant.
The magistrate determined that a conviction was necessary, thereby ending the man's unblemished criminal record. He received a nine-month community correction order and was fined $300 for his actions.
