Former Police Union Leader Found Deceased in Brisbane Home
Ian Leavers, the inaugural Cross-Border Commissioner for Queensland and former long-serving police union boss, has been discovered dead at his Mount Ommaney residence. Queensland Police Service confirmed they responded to a non-suspicious sudden death at approximately 9.50am on Monday in the south-western Brisbane suburb.
Distinguished Career in Queensland Law Enforcement
Leavers served as president of the Queensland Police Union of Employees for 15 years, from 2009 until 2024, before being appointed to the newly created position of Cross-Border Commissioner. When accepting this groundbreaking role, Leavers expressed his commitment to addressing the unique challenges facing border communities, stating he had witnessed these issues first-hand during his extensive career.
"I look forward to working collaboratively with all jurisdictions that share a border with Queensland and am determined to make a difference to the lives of the thousands of people who call these regions home," Leavers said upon his appointment.
Recent Legal Proceedings and Ongoing Investigations
In recent months, the former union leader had been engaged in a controversial legal battle concerning a payout of entitlements from the Queensland Police Union. Police have confirmed that investigations related to this matter remain ongoing, though they've emphasised that his death is not considered suspicious.
Born in England, Leavers moved to Queensland with his family when he was just four years old. He was educated at St Laurence's College and began his law enforcement career when he joined the police force in 1989, eventually rising to become one of the most influential figures in Queensland policing.
